The Legacy Behind the Name
gallon-monroe, named after my mother, grandmothers, and great-grand aunt, is a tribute to the remarkable Black women in my family—women who grew up during the inception of the Jim Crow era, facing discrimination, segregation, and inequality.
I saw them stand with unwavering courage.
I saw them fully embrace their identity while the world around them screamed their unworthiness.
I saw them rise boldly, even as others shrank in the shadows of fear.
I saw them care for the sick, selflessly setting aside their own needs to nurture those around them.
I saw them anchor themselves in unshakeable faith, even as life’s relentless storms crashed upon them.
I saw them forge paths where none existed, defying impossibility with quiet determination.
I saw them endure the deep ache and pain of loving beyond measure yet choosing to love still.
In seeing them, I longed to embody their strength, their grace—I wanted to be them.
I honor the legacy of strength, resilience, and unwavering faith they demonstrated throughout their lives, inspiring me to carry those values forward in everything I do and to empower others as they empowered me.
