Helen Stagg

OUR LEADERSHIP AND TEAM

Founder Helen Stagg

Over the 40+ years partnering with nonprofit organizations before I launched gallon-monroe, I’ve gained a keen understanding of the many distinct challenges nonprofit leaders face—from navigating intricate regulatory environments and fostering community engagement to securing long-term funding and working effectively with board members and staff.

My expertise in government relations, community advocacy, program development and evaluation, and fundraising allows me to offer strategic insights that empower nonprofits to not only survive but thrive.

Mission-driven, I’ve helped secure over $70 million in funding for public and nonprofit agencies. My work has helped:

  • expand access to healthcare coverage,
  • reduce teen pregnancy,
  • advocate for healthier indoor air policies,
  • drive policy changes to raise investment in communities,
  • increase housing for low-income families,
  • expand public green spaces, and
  • secure funding for numerous grassroots and minority organizations.

During my tenure as Chief Executive Officer of Houston’s largest and oldest Black-founded nonprofit organization,  Civic Heart Community Services, I spearheaded a 240% increase in the organizational budget, a 40% staff expansion, and a doubling of volunteers -- while broadening services to over 50 counties.

I have helped numerous nonprofit organizations:

  • build capacity,
  • improve operational efficiency by as much as 25%,
  • increase fundraising by more than 50% to enable greater community impact
  • and develop vital skills needed to fulfill on their missions in a dynamic, ever demanding operating environment.

My role as CEO at Civic Heart coupled with over two decades’ experience in state government, provides a wealth of hard-earned, firsthand knowledge and deep empathy for the nonprofit leadership teams I support.

In addition to my client work, I also serve as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Texas A&M University-Commerce and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. I am an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Alpha Eta Omega Chapter.

As an act of service, I contribute to several boards, including the University of Houston’s HEALTH Research Institute’s Community Advisory Board and the State Association of Substance Abuse Programs.

In Heart-Centered Leadership, I had the honor of joining twenty-one other authors to contribute a chapter I titled Leading with Love. This chapter reflects my value-driven leadership model, offering a personal insight into my philosophy on leading with compassion, collaboration, reverence, and gratefulness. If you're interested in exploring more, Heart-Centered Leadership is available on Amazon.com.

My approach to client counsel and support is rooted in developing customized, actionable strategies that align with each organization’s mission and goals. Driven by a deep commitment to causes that matter, I am passionate about empowering non-profit leaders to maximize their impact.
